The English Curriculum at Nettleworth Infant and Nursery School
At Nettleworth Infant and Nursery School, we are Linguists! We inspire our children to be curious and passionate about language. Our aim is for the children to be ambitious and grow up with a love for reading, writing, and communication. We intend for children to become active learners where they become knowledgeable and confident in their use of language, by engaging in a variety of speaking, listening, and literacy activities. Nettleworth’s English curriculum provides opportunities to promote the spiritual, moral, and cultural development of our children. We develop cultural capital by fostering meaningful interactions with an overarching aim to nurture, flourish, and achieve!
Nettleworth Infant and Nursery School is a unique and wonderful school. We have identified the need to shape and drive the curriculum based on our school vision and ethos. We have developed 6 key curriculum drivers which underpin the learning and experiences we undertake in all areas of school life. These run as a thread throughout each curriculum subject to ensure our curriculum is enriched and implemented to provide appropriate and ambitious curriculum opportunities for our children to SHINE.
Our English curriculum is well-sequenced and progressive throughout the school, taking into consideration the strands of spoken language, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. In order to support our children in their ability to know more and remember more, there are opportunities to review the previous learning that has taken place so that we thrive.
An English student leaving Nettleworth Infant and Nursery School will be curious and passionate about language and literature. They will have explored a wide range of texts, from classic literature to contemporary stories, to develop their reading and comprehension skills. They will have honed their writing abilities, expressing themselves creatively and accurately in various forms. Through our collaborative activities, they will have gained a deep appreciation for the richness of language and its power to communicate ideas and emotions. They will also have the ability to analyse texts critically and articulate their thoughts confidently. We believe that the impact of our coherent English curriculum is that children develop a lifelong love of reading and writing, teachers have high expectations, and quality evidence is presented through reading logs, writing books, independent writing opportunities and pupil voice.
